Trauma

Psychological trauma is an emotional response to a subjectively perceived painful or distressing experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. The experience can cause acute (short-lived) or chronic reactions and can result from a single event or repeated exposure to harm (complex trauma).

Initial shock, denial, and confusion.

Long-term effects can include anxiety, depression, dissociation, emotional numbness, and difficulty forming relationships.
